Ziya Dilimer

Bio

Ziya Dilimer was born on September 1, 1932 in the country of Turkey. He attended a technical high school and was drafted shortly thereafter to serve in the Turkish military. He was quickly sent to the Korean War and served as a technician sergeant working on automotives and electrical repairs. His job kept him in the repair shop and off of the front lines. During his time there, he found the Korean people to be warm and good but suffering and living in poverty. He had hoped to return to Korea and witness firsthand the recovery and progress made since the war but was not able to.

Ziya Dilimer describes his Korean War experience. He explains how his job of working in the repair shop kept him safely behind the front lines and that his biggest challenge was keeping enough spare parts on hand. He elaborates on the challenge of keeping vehicles running and gun barrels efficient.

Ziya Dilimer remembers being given a pack of cigarettes a day as a part of his K-Ration. He recalls the Chesterfield brand as his favorite during the war. He jokingly describes how ice cream would be issued all throughout the year, despite the season.
