Garry Rockburn (79) was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He was a first-year student in college before he enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1950 in Ottawa, Ontario. In December 1954, he was drafted into the US Army (Syracuse, NY). During his service period, he went to Haneda Air Force Base and Kimpo Air Base, Korea. He served in the 426th Squadron of the RCAF as a leading aircraftsman, and had transitioned to corporal flight cadet/flying officer candidate by the time of his discharge. He was in the aircrew as a loader and service/mechanic refueling and performing minor repairs on aircraft (North Star). Rockburn would also fly regularly between Japan and Korea, from McCord Air Force Base, USA, Shemya, in the Alutians, and sometimes Wake Island then on to Japan, Hovea Air Force Base. For his commitments he received the Volunteer Service Medal (Canada), Korean Service Medal (Canada), UN Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (US), National Defense Medal (US), and German Occupation Medal (US). After returning to the United States, he went to officer school in the RCAF Tenton for 16 weeks. He later immigrated to the United States and settled in Syracuse, NY after being discharged from military service.
