Richard Smith (79) was born in Utica, NY. He was a student before he enlisted. Smith served in the military from 1948 to 1952. During his service period, he went to Korea and Japan and was stationed on the USS New Jersey (BB 62) and USS Portsmouth (LL102) from May 1951 to November 1951. He served in the US Navy as P01 before his discharge. During the Korean War, Smith was a radioman, transitioned to Machinist Mate p01 after college, and participated in the Korea-Chinese Spring Offensive from April 1951 to July 1951 and May 16, 1951 to November 1951 as well as the Summer Offensive from July 9, 1951 to November 1951. For his commitments, he received an American Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Expert Battleman, UN Korean Service, ROK Service Medal, and Korean Presidential Medal. After returning to the United States, he got married on January 19, 1952. After being discharged from military service, he went to college.
